Happy 17th of February!!
So, this is a short flashback post to when I went to Berlin by myself in April 2023. Basically, I had been talking to this German guy and really wanted to go to Germany, so I booked tickets out there. That was a bit crazy.
Then, he bailed on me like a week prior (which fair, I didn't really know him but also--rude.) So instead I took a blablacar to Berlin and explored there instead of Nuremburg. It was amazing.
I had been hearing from friends the whole year in Alicante that I would love Berlin. It's funky and queer and very vegan. They were very right. It's been a while so I'll try to remember what I can, but there should be some fun photos too.
I flew into Nuremberg, where the guy lived, and explored around the old center of the city for a while
Germany has very good moss. It was pretty and very fairytale
My blablacar was meeting me somewhere out in the middle of nowhere, so I took a taxi out there
this part was a little sketchy. Basically I was sitting alone next to a truck stop on the autobahn for a half hour until the car of random people arrived to drive me to Berlin
I ate a sandwich I had brought, which was nice
But, it ended up that my blablacar was really lovely!! they were all young and friendly.
the driver worked in Berlin but commuted from Nuremberg a few times a month or something; young professional vibes
one girl had a broken ankle!
another girl was very much a hippy and we got along really well
The autobahn is crazy you can drive like 90 mph and its totally chill. VERY speedy.
When I got to Berlin I was staying in this massive hostel. It was like a big hotel full of dorms.
I probably just went to sleep that first night
Daytime adventures in no particular order of day:
history tour of the city, including location of hitler's bunker
explored the wall
botanical garden, parks, tulips
Went to a cool queer women owned sex shop
went to the Berlin wall museum too
learned about the topography of terror at the museum and walking along the grounds
ended up in a random mall somehow
I ate tons of delicious vegan foods
Even dunkin donuts has vegan donuts in Berlin? It's insane
Berlin is really cool because the history feels really recent. There's evidence everywhere of the wall and the war. So much of the city was flattened and rebuilt as well, so it's a mix of really old buildings and really new ones.
The people were really kooky and queer and fun and colorful
The girl from my BlaBlaCar and I went to a flea market and I bought these really cute beaded necklaces that I love and my favorite little painting of a dinosaur
I didn't really make any friends at my hostel because it was so large, but I had just gotten back from my trip to Croatia and was very in need of some introvert time, so I was okay being solo a lot.
Chatted with one guy on my walking tour, he was working for an F1 race that was coming to town, so that was cool
nighttime adventures
Because I was solo travelling, I don't like to drink a ton because I'm not an idiot but I did try some beers
I had really been wanting to go to this famous queer sex nightclub called KitKat
It was incredible I went back twice
probably did lots of other stuff, and had lots of fun, but I forget hehe
Photos
Currently I'm back in in Alicante for a few days (leaving tonight) with Jake for a visit to Spain on my week off from classes. I have lots of silly photos and stories and adventures to write about and I'm working on my next post now, will be much more exciting than this one, I promise.
