OMG I MADE IT TO ALICANTE GUYS MY NEW HOME
Okay in reality I’ve been here a week but here are the deets, including the long awaited (not really because I’ve written these at essentially the same time) conclusion to the travel from London mishap
How to Get from London to Alicante: a very useless guide written by Hanna and Emery
Wake up at three am
Leave your hostel by 3:30
Get on the tube
Check that the train you want (Gatwick Express) runs in time for your flight
Internet says it does! Yay!
Get on second tube toward London Victoria where the train is
But wait! Victoria is closed…
Hm, guess that makes sense, it is 4am
Wait until 5am aka sit outside for an hour in the cold mumbling gibberish to each other because you’ve barely slept
Realize at 5:05 the gates to Victoria are not opening at 5 LIKE THE INTERNET SAID THEY WOULD
Speak to the mean man at the fence who says nah you gotta go to the other station, several tube stops and at least 30 mins away because YOUR GATWICK EXPRESS DOESN’T EXIST TODAY
Then why could you buy tickets you may ask? That is a great question with no logical answer
say oh boy no, lets Uber
Uber says okay haha but give us $80 because its still only 5:15 am
Realize in the Uber that you will be there 5 minutes before bag drop closes for your flight because for some insane reason EasyJet closes bag drop 40 mins before the plane takes off, and closes the gate 10 mins after that???
Watch the 5 mins slowly turn into 4 and then 2 and watch people pass you on the highway
Hear your Uber driver say, “we have to stop for petrol, it’ll be two mins” and almost scream but instead go “if there’s any way you could NOT DO THAT WE’D LOVE IT HAHA >:(”
Finally rush out of the Uber just to get into a long ass line for bag drop
Get to bag drop five minutes late and the system won’t let you in and customer service can’t do anything so you miss your flight
SUPERHERO of this story: customer service helper <3 Leroy <3 ignores all other customers (hehe) to help rebook us onto the 8:25 flight
Walks us over to the tram to the other terminal and gives us his phone number just in case we miss this second flight
It cost us 110 pounds and he shows us the charges on the computer
buuuuut they haven’t showed up on either of our cards yet so entirely possible this god on earth didn’t charge us at all
Make it onto the next flight and head to your new country <3
SO now we are finally in Spain, in Alicante, where my mom’s best friend Pablo and his wife live and were waiting to pick us up and bring us to the apartment, we’re renting from them :)
Once we got to Alicante we had a week before we actually were supposed to start working at our schools. We had a bunch of logistical and moving related stuff we had to figure out to get settled and that was a little complicated. Also sorta boring so I have forgotten a lot of it but I tried to recap it in all its glory here:
Sunday:
Toni and Pablo took us to their laundromat (Pablo owns this too)
We met their pups
Dropped off our bags in the apartment
Went out to a vegetarian restaurant with fantastic fake cheese Came home and unpacked
Monday:
Pablo took us to a bank
We got tried to get sim cards, but most places either didn’t have them in person, didn’t have the carrier we wanted, or only had then before siesta and not in the evening??
Looked for a gym and found a super cool one but got locked on a balcony somehow and had to climb over to escape lmao
Wednesday:
Spent like 8 years trying to figure out our sim cards omfg
Bought them and then set them up but wow
Probably went grocery shopping? Maybe tried a different gym?
Thursday:
Made our bank accounts, took like 2 hours
Guy was nice, but he was like “okay, gotta go” halfway through for his coffee break (lmao Spain)
I started to feel a bit sicky
Brain gets very tired from Spanish all the time
Its like waking up taking a test every morning
Met our new friend Gemma who is from the DMV!!! We love Gemma she’s fun & weird
Friday:
Went to find our new schools!! Tram is about an hour each way, but its up the coast so its really beautiful
I was really sicky at this point, so I stayed in and rested Friday night
Groceries?
Saturday:
Went to play frisbee!!! So fun!!
I made friends with a German and two Spaniards, and we went out for cervecitas (beer) after
I’m playing beach out here which I love, because mixed is more chill than just the constant deep cuts in mixed grass
Went to a vegan festival right next to our house!!
We went out for dinner with Maeci from CSULB who is doing her senior year at Universidad de Alicante but she kind of didn’t seem to like it here which is crazy??
Then met up with some girls Gemma had been talking to and they were fun but very normal and we are a lil weird so...
Stayed out with Gemma and got a little crossed, danced in clubs by the sea, went out too early because people leave home at like 12 here so ack gotta adjust to that
Try to meet up with some brits from the internet (Chester Archie Jake) but meh because they are leaving the next day anyway so what's the use
Sunday:
Chilled
Did laundry at the laundromat for a couple hours
Prepared for first day of school!!
Here are the photos of my first week!!
Okay I will update separately on my first week of school :) it’s been quite the adventure, in a great way.
NEW FORM! WOOO!
